Coping with Seasonal Hair Shedding

Pisces marks the completion of an astrological year.

Similar to the end of the calendar year, and to how we view the closing of a cycle, this particular energy is encouraging us to shed and release in order to create space for new.

Pisces is a water sign, so this month we will be dealing with some deep emotions as Pisces carries the empath energy. Pisces is our time to alleviate the pain and suffering surrounding around your hair and embrace the new. If re-channeled in a positive direction, we have the ability to transform our relationship to our hair.

The hair growth cycle consists of three distinct stages – anagen (growing), catagen(resting) and telogen(shedding). Losing hair is a natural part of the hair growth cycle. We lose hair so that new hair can replace it. Hair loss is one of the biggest topics that gets brought up when people come to see me for their hair care. Hair loss can come from many different sources, however, one of the biggest sources that is the most common is seasonal shedding.

Biologically, the hair on our head is there specifically to protect the skin of our scalp from the sun’s rays. In the summer months, our hair grows a lot more because the sun is stronger and brighter. Hence the reason why the summer season is when our hair is the most full and healthy. Usually in winter months, starting as early as fall, the shedding occurs.

How can we change our perspective on hair shedding?

Instead of creating stress and anxiety over it, we can approach it with a new perspective. Acceptance around shedding and utilizing this time to connect and create intention with what you want to release and shed while the hair is in the telogen phase. Afterwards, we create space for the new hair to grow in as healthy and strong as possible during the anagen phase.

During these seasonal transition periods, I highly suggest considering these tips when you're trying to take your hair care to the next level:

1. BRUSHING Stimulates the follicle and increases the circulation in our scalps which helps the new hair to grow at a much quicker pace. Brushing is a really great way to clean out the old to make way for the new!

2. SUPPLEMENTS I love adaptogens for hair, like He Shou Wu and the Mucuna Pruriens. These are both powerful tonics that aid in hair health and growth, which is the reason why I put them in the La Tierra Sagrada Dry Shampoos. Alternative supplements for hair growth are Biotin and Viviscal. Supplements like fish oil, flax oil or alternative internal oils, are also really great for hair health as they provide hydration, strength, and shine- in addition to protection from the sun.

3. HAIR TREATMENTS Taking the time to care for ourselves is so important in these times. We are all too busy, overwhelmed, and overbooked to slow down. However, if we can find a way to slow down and take the time to really nurture ourselves, this can be imperative, not only for our hair health, but our overall health! If we are experiencing hair loss due to any kind of trauma, stress or imbalance within our bodies, doing a hair treatment is a highly important way to bring everything back to center. Hair treatments help balance out the scalp, stimulate the hair follicle, and aid in healing. I encourage using nourishing products, like the La Tierra Sagrada Treatment, that aid in treating the hair and scalp on a deep level.

4. DETOXIFY I love scalp scrubs for their ability to deeply detoxify the scalp. Are you using toxic products products? It is something to consider when you're trying to detox your scalp. I always suggest using a good cleansing/purifying shampoo to break up any build up and dead skin cells on the scalp. This cleansing helps the follicle to open and breathe; it allows it to do its natural thing- to grow new hair follicles!

5. CUT OUT CHEMICALS Are you using hair products packed with toxic chemicals? This is something to be aware of, as out hair can become suffocated with chemicals. Our hair naturally produces oil, our hair naturally wants to grow, but when we put things directly on our scalps, we don't consider the fact that they could possibly be clogging the pores in our scalp, they could be causing build up, and slowing down the hair's ability to grow, which inevitably can lead to hair loss. I like to educate about the importance of natural ingredients due to their gentle, nurturing approach to the hair. If you are considering making the shift from chemical products to natural products, start with the basics, like a natural shampoo and conditioner and then move into clean styling products.

6. RELAX Breath, try to find a way to relieve all of the stress that you're holding. Try some breath work, or a meditation practice, or try slowing down enough to do a healing hair ritual. These are all tips to alleviate stress which in the long run can prevent hair loss as well as prevent your whole self from imbalance.
